Franklin started as an assistant to his professional photographer father. As a teenager, he was asked to be the main photographer while his father became his assistant. In the decades that followed he branched into all types of photography including being a Los Angeles era press photographer, after which he incorporated the photo journalistic approach into wedding photography which, at the time, was not a known wedding style.
